C U R R E N T   N E W S
Hello, all!

Just a few last-minute items for you this week. By the way, although you won't be getting weekly e-mails (you're welcome!), please watch your e-mail for any summer events that come up, such as hiking, perhaps a weekend camp, bike trek, etc. We're still trying to see if there's time to cram in any of these events.

OK, here it is:

Attention scouts and families: Our Troop Court of Honor will be held at EMS on Friday, June 11. We'll start at 6:00. Everyone should bring their own entrees (something to throw on the grill, or sandwiches, etc.) The "Bubba-Q" grill will be there for everyone to use. Patrols will be assigned additional items to bring, i.e. salads, desserts, drinks, chips. Scouts, parents, and siblings should all attend and have a great evening! Class A's, please.)

**Note: This is not to be confused with Ross Kelley's Eagle Scout Court of Honor on June 12. Please see details below.

EAGLE SCOUT COURT OF HONOR: And if you thought our Court of Honor was cool, wait till you see this. If you've never been to one, or if you've been to a dozen, you'll want to join us for Ross Kelley's official recognition as an Eagle Scout. For this year's new crop of scouts, Ross is a 635 alumnus who graduated last year. He's been away at college in Canada all year, so it's now time to party and celebrate his accomplishment. The whole troop takes part in the ceremony, so even if you don't know who this Ross guy is, you and your family are invited! (Class A's, please.)

Please join Ross and his family on Saturday, June 12 at 3:30 at the First Congregational Church in Essex Junction. It's the big brick church on route 15 near 5 Corners. There will be snacks and cake after the ceremony. (Mmm, tasty treats...always a good thing...).

Don't forget to RSVP so the Kelleys can plan to feed you!

SUMMER HIKING: Mr. Thompson will be heading up some hiking opportunities beginning in early June. Here are the scheduled dates:

June 18 - 20 - 20 Mile Hike - Laraway Section of LT from Belvidere to Johnson, or other sections of LT
June 25 - 27 - Alternate 20 Mile Hike Date
July 8th - 12th - 50 Mile Hike - From Rt 4. (Killington) to Rt. 11/30 (Bromley)
Mr. Thompson will need some adults and older scouts to help make these treks happen. Please let him know if you're interested. You can e-mail him at bob.thompson@vt.usda.gov.

MT. NORRIS FUNDRAISER: I am very pleased to announce that Troop 635 will be donating a total of $1071.37!!!! Our troop ROCKS!!! Thank you to all of you who made a donation. I'm sure all of our boys will enjoy the new waterfront this summer.

SUMMER CAMP: It's not too late! You can still register for summer camp at Mt. Norris. The full fee is now $300. Still TOTALLY worth it!!

PHYSICALS: I spoke with council recently, and their take is that each scout needs a new physical, not just a form, each year. I know that some of you have concerns with this policy. I would encourage you to call council and speak with them. They can be reached at (802) 244-5189.

That's it for now. See you Friday!

Hello, all!

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. It's time to get down to business as our scouting year wraps up. This will be the second-to-last weekly update for the year, but be sure to stay tuned to this channel for periodic news and summer events. But for now, off we go:

Cool news item: Cameron Croft and Daniel Feliciano served as color guard for the EMS Memorial Day Assembly last Friday. I've been told they did an excellent job. Job well done, guys!

LAST CHANCE TO TURN IN BLUE CARDS! 2. MEMORIAL DAY PARADE: Thanks to all of you who represented the Great Troop 635 in Saturday's parade. We were met all along the way with lots of cheers and applause. Good show!

3. PLC: NO PLC THIS WEEK!

4. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: Clean up day for merit badges. If you are a merit badge counselor and are available on June 2, please join us. It's a great chance for finishing up last minute stuff. If you have no merit badges to work on, I'm fairly certain there will be a killer game of ultimate frisbee outside...
If you are in need of a Scoutmaster Conference and/or Board of Review for rank advancement, please let me know in advance so I can plan for these.
PARENTS: If you're available to help with Boards of Review, your help will be most appreciated.
Please note: I will be about 20 minutes late for the meeting due to a concert at my daughter's school. I will get there as soon as possible. I'll arrange for boards of review to begin before I arrive. If you need a scoutmaster conference, hold your horses. I'll be there ASAP.

5. TROOP 635 Spring Court of Honor: Scouts and families! We'll feast, we'll reminisce, we'll award merit badges and rank advancements galore. This will be at EMS on Friday, June 11 at 6:00. Please see the note at the top of this e-mail for more details.
NOTE: There will be no regular troop meeting on June 9. 6. EAGLE SCOUT COURT OF HONOR: And if you thought our Court of Honor was cool, wait till you see this. Hey, guys.

Whoa, summer is apparently here. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that I won't be waking up to sideways snow tomorrow. Hope you're all finding some good ways to stay cool.

Troop 635 Cool Thing of the Week: Nick Peterson won the award for best cinematography from the 50-hour film competition they had at the school (the kids had 50 hours to put a movie together, soup to nuts. Writing/casting/shooting/editing/producing.) They showed all of them at Essex Cinemas 2-3 weeks ago and he came out on top! Well done, Nick!

Here's what you need to know for this week.

IMPORTANT DATE TO NOTE: DEADLINE FOR ADVANCEMENT PRIOR TO COURT OF HONOR IS WED., JUNE 2 !!! (Yeah, I know that's the second time I've said that. Think it might be important?)
1. SCOUTING FOR FOOD: Thank you to all of you who participated, and extra thanks to all the parents who drove and sorted. And congratulations to Kyle Boomhower for putting it all together. A job very well done! We collected a boat load (a really big boat) of food. You should all be very proud of yourselves. A lot of people will fill their hungry bellies this summer because of your efforts. Bravo!

2. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: Continuing with merit badges and advancement. Please don't forget whatever materials you'll need. Orienteering guys, don't forget your compasses.

3. MEMORIAL DAY PARADE: Our troop will be participating in the parade. If you're available, I'd love for you to be there. This is a great opportunity to get a little PR for the troop. (Aaaaand, since it's the Essex Memorial Day Parade, it would be fairly cheesy if the Essex Boy Scout troop was not there...) The parade is on the morning of Saturday, May 29th. If you haven't already, please let me know if you'll be participating. (There may be tasty treats involved...)
We will meet at the fairgrounds at 8:15 Saturday morning. Just ask one of the organizers where to go. We'll have some time to kill, so feel free to bring a frisbee, football, etc. (No electronics, please.)

4. PLC: We have a PLC meeting scheduled for next Tuesday, June 1. Unfortunately, I have a scheduling conflict. If possible, I'd like to meet for a few minutes at the end of this week's meeting. As we're coming to the end of our year, there's not all that much to discuss, so it shouldn't take too long.

5. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: Clean up day for merit badges. If your are a merit badge counselor and are available on June 2, please join us. It's a great chance for finishing up last minute stuff. If you have no merit badges to work on, I'm fairly certain there will be a killer game of ultimate frisbee outside...

Hey, guys.

Saw Ironman 2 this weekend. An excellent film! If you haven't seen it yet, GO! Go now and go swiftly! (Unless you're reading this on Wednesday evening, in which case you'd better get yourself to the meeting right now.)
Anyway, I can't think of anything clever right now, so here you go:

1. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: Continuing with merit badges and advancement. Please don't forget whatever materials you'll need. Orienteering guys, don't forget your compasses.

2. SCOUTING FOR FOOD: Our annual service project! We'll be collecting food for the food shelf THIS SATURDAY, May 22. As always, this is a mandatory event. The only acceptable reasons for missing the event are religious obligations, being out of town, or brain surgery (your own). This is our biggest community service project of the year and all scouts are expected to participate. As in past years, scouts who do not participate are expected to complete six hours of community service prior to their next rank advancement, as well as a delay in rank advancement.
Kyle Boomhower has worked very hard to organize the event, and I want to thank him for all of his hard work. Also, thanks to all the parents who have volunteered to drive!

***DETAILS:
We will be meeting at EMS at 9:00 SHARP on Saturday morning. Please do not be late! Cars will be leaving for pick ups no later than 9:30. Please note: Kyle has assigned each scout to a driver. Please do not plan to "trade" rides, or to try to choose who will ride with whom. Kyle has a system and it looks like it will work well.
After we've picked up all the food, we'll take it to St. Pius for sorting. I believe we'll be finished up in the very early afternoon.

3. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: We'll continue with merit badges and advancement.

4. Personal fitness: If you started the personal fitness merit badge with Sonnick last spring, please see me. I have his list of the requirements that were finished.

5. MEMORIAL DAY PARADE: Our troop will be participating in the parade. If you're available, I'd love for you to be there. This is a great opportunity to get a little PR for the troop. Hello, all, and Happy Mother's Day to all of our Scouting moms!

OK, that would have made more sense had I sent this yesterday, when it was actually Mother's Day, however I was recovering from my fabulous weekend at the Spring Damporee! You know, you've gotta love waking up in a tent, unzipping the door, and finding that outside it's SNOWING SIDEWAYS.

Moving on. I'm pretty sure I just broke my toe about an hour ago, so I'm going finish this up quickly and then go cry a little. By the way, I will not be at the meeting on Wednesday due to a lecture I'm presenting, so please call me or e-mail with anything that can't wait until the 19th.

1. THANK YOU! Big thanks to all the parents who corrected the Scouting for Food flyers last week. All 1550 of them. (Flyers, not parents.) Also, thank you to the parents who braved the wet and cold at the Spring Damporee: Mr. Spaeth (above and beyond), Mrs. Cram, Mr. Watts, Mr. Croft, Mrs. Sweeney, Mr. Bovee, and Mr. Petrow.

2. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: Continuing with merit badges and advancement. Please don't forget whatever materials you'll need. Orienteering guys, don't forget your compasses.

3. SPRING CAMPOREE: As I've said before, rain, cold, wind and snow, with an occasional sunny break. Canoeing in the rain. Good food. Birthday cupcakes for Colin Watts. And, four of our scouts were tapped out for the Order of the Arrow: Jonathan Spaeth, Steven Maloney, Josh Sharp, and Mark Furland. Also elected but not present for the tap-out were Kyle Boomhower and Nick Peterson.

4. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: We'll continue with merit badges and advancement.

5. SCOUTING FOR FOOD: Our annual service project! We'll be collecting food for the food shelf on May 22. As always, this is a mandatory event. The only acceptable reasons for missing the event are religious obligations, being out of town, or brain surgery (your own). If you are not available, you must call me and let me know why you are unable to attend. We'll start in the morning, and usually finish by early afternoon. We'll be looking for all available parents to drive! Kyle Boomhower is coordinating the event and will be contacting you soon regarding drivers.

6. MEMORIAL DAY PARADE: I'm still trying to get this put together so we can have a ginormous gathering of scouts to celebrate the 100th anniversary of BSA. Please let me know ASAP if you're available to participate in the parade with our troop and many others.

7. PHILMONT 2011: Details for Philmont 2011 are now on line at: http://www.scoutingvermont.org/Events/If We will be leaving on or about June 29th. Youth and adult applications are available from the website. $100 deposit is required with application. On that note, those who are interested in going to Philmont need to get out this summer and do some back packing. I have June 5th or 6th marked on my calendar to do a day hike up Camel's Hump or Mansfield. I would like to do a 20 mile hike on the LT the weekend of June 19th or 26th. Then I would like to do a 50 miler early to mid July! Anyone interested can talk to Mr. Thompson on Wednesday!

8. MT. NORRIS FUNDRAISER: Mt. Norris is planning a much-needed renovation of the waterfront, complete with a new dock and and sailing area. Troop 635 - Where we're so cool, even our SPL goes BOOM.
Welcome back! I hope you had a great week off and enjoyed the (gulp) snow?!?

My apologies for the Monday-ness of this e-mail. Like you, I've been in vacation mode and it's tough getting back into the swing of things.

Tip of the Week: If you haven't been to Gettysburg, GO TO GETTYSBURG! With all possible haste! What an amazing place to visit. We had a great time there, then went on to the Air and Space museum and the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. (Fear the goat!)

BUT, I digress once again. Here's what you need to know this week:

1. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: Happy Cinco de Mayo! Wear your sombrero as we get ready for the camporee, and enjoy a Mexican fiesta. A reminder, please bring $2.00 to cover the cost of the food. Bring a frisbee or football and we'll just have a good time. Don't forget, this is also the due date for early-bird summer camp payment of $270.

Any available parents, we have some flyers to correct for Scouting for Food. I'd love to have your help!

2. PLC: Tuesday, (tomorrow), at my house, 6:30. If it's not raining, we'll try to have the meeting outside, so please bring a chair. Also, patrol leaders, don't forget your notebooks and a pen or pencil. Other guys, you'll need something to write on too. For you new guys, we usually finish up in an hour or so.

3. SPRING CAMPOREE: This weekend! We'll meet at EMS at 5:00 on Friday. For those of you who've offered to drive, please let me know before Wednesday if you are able to transport any bicycles. We'll be planning rides during the meeting on Wed.

4. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: We'll continue with merit badges and advancement.

7. PHILMONT 2011: Details for Philmont 2011 are now on line at: http://www.scoutingvermont.org/Events/If We will be leaving on or about June 29th. The trek will be July 1 thru 13 and we will be returning to Vermont on or about July 14th. Cost will be $1850 per person which includes airfare, lodging, food, etc. Treks are filling fast. One trek is full already with venturing scouts although this is not entirely first come first serve. Scouts must prove they are physically fit and mentally up for it. "This is not a walk in the park!" Average altitude is 6000 feet. They are looking to interview adults interested in going next month. For a once in a life time adventure, check it out or give me a call. Personally it has been my most rewarding scouting experience and I can't wait to go back.

8. T-SHIRT/HOODIE ORDERS - LAST CHANCE:
It is time to place your order for Boy Scout T-shirts and Hoodies! Get your orders in to Mrs. Furland THIS WEDNESDAYor by e-mail: karenbtv@yahoo.com. For those who already have a hoody, please bring/wear it to the next 2 meetings so everyone can get an idea of sizes!

It is best to place an order for T-shirts. But we will order extras, so you can still get one, even if you don't order one.
There are 2 chances to get T-shirts: If you need a S, M, XXL or XXXL, then you can buy one at the next 2 meetings if you bring money! We will also sell shirts again (all sizes) at Scouting for Food on May 22. But order now! Hoodies cost $20. Troop 635 - Where if your SPL had any more power, we'd all be wearing jammies.
Hello, all!

Well, it's the beginning of yet another rainy week in paradise. I'm hopeful that the weather guys know what they're talking about and it's actually warm by the weekend. Looks like our 8th graders will have a good time later this week - they're heading to Washington, DC where the forecast calls for sunny 80 degree days and the scent of cherry blossoms will be wafting through the air. (Yeah, I know, you guys don't care about the cherry blossoms. At least take a picture for us moms, OK?)

So, the word you're looking for is ... ANYWAY...I've attached the updated event schedule, which will hopefully remain unchanged for the next couple of months. The only thing that's up in the air right now is the Day of Koolness. Plans are still in the works, and I'll update you as soon as I know anything definite. Please watch this space for breaking news.

Here's this week's scoop.

2. Service opportunity/Pinewood Derby concession
3. Next week's meeting
4. Mt. Norris deposit
5. Eagle scout project

1. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: This week we'll be staging a disaster of epic proportions! Tires screeching, bodies flying, limbs flailing...and that's just the opening meeting! We'll test our first aid skills and try to put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

OK, seriously, it probably won't be quite that dramatic. But we will stage some sort of mass accident and there will be victims to assess and treat. We're hoping to have an ambulance there as well, and to get a chance to practice some CPR. Don't miss this! (It's a requirement for the E-Prep merit badge!)

TFC guys: You'll continue to work on advancement with your patrol. The way you guys are going, you'll be Eagle scouts by Christmas. (Well, that may be an exaggeration, but you get the idea - you're kicking some serious hiney!)

2. SERVICE OPPORTUNITY / PINEWOOD DERBY CONCESSION THIS SATURDAY: Pack 635 is in need of some help from Troop 635. Pack 635 is running the District Pinewood Derby on April 3rd and needs some Boy Scouts to help set up, run the concession stand, and do final cleanup at the end of the day. We ask all Boy Scouts from the 6th grade on up to help. We will have many stations for you to work. You do not need to be there the whole time, you can come for part of the day. But we do ask that you check with your parents and get back to us at the Boy Scout meeting this Wednesday night so that we know who will be there. The start time that we will need help is at 10:00 in the morning, running up to and ending around 5:00. You will earn service hours for the time you spend.

3. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: SPL and Patrol Leader elections will be on April 7. Remember that this is your chance to participate in the troop leadership and to help shape the troop and its activities. You must be a Life scout in high school to run for SPL and 1st class and 8th grade to run for Patrol Leader. If you plan to run please see me on Wednesday.

We'll also be working on patrol box maintenance next week. Please be there if possible, as this is important for everyone to know!

Troop 635 - Where if your SPL had any more power, we'd all be wearing jammies.
Hello, all!

Soooo, I've been told by one of our illustrious adult leaders that he doesn't think he needs to read these e-mails because they're always the same. OK, so there's a lot of repetitive stuff. HOWEVER, if you don't read your e-mail, how can you possibly know when it's OK to forego the class A uniform and enjoy Casual Wednesday in your class B? Seriously, you never know what gems of information you'll find here. So go ahead, read it! I double-dog dare you.

Here's this week's scoop.

1. LAST WEEK'S MEETING: I want to take a minute to thank all of you for your cooperation last week. All of the patrol boxes were cleaned up and a MOUNTAIN of dishes were washed. Everyone worked together and pitched in to get stuff ready for our outdoor cooking. Lots of good food was to be had, and THEN you had to clean the dishes and patrol boxes YET AGAIN! Thanks to you all for pulling together and showing how a great troop works.

2. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: Lashing! Class B's are OK this week.

3. TFC CAMPOUT: This was awesome! We finished off a bunch of requirements for our TFC crew, had a BIG FIRE, campfire songs and skits, AND advanced every one of the new boys to the rank of Scout. Congratulations to them all! Many, many thanks to our adult leaders, Mr. and Mrs. Fraser, Mr. Feliciano, and Mr. Croft. As always, your help is very much appreciated. We couldn't do it without you.
***LOST GLOVE: If anyone ended up with a black Spyder glove that does not belong to you, please bring it to me on Wednesday so I can return it to its rightful owner. He'll appreciate it ~ the one glove look went out back in the 80's.

4. MT. NORRIS DEPOSIT: If you'd like to attend Summer Camp, please return the attached form with your $25 deposit in the next 2 weeks. Summer camp at Mt. Norris will be the first week of August. EARLY BIRD PAYMENT DATE IS MAY 5th. Early bird cost is $270, after that it's $300. Still the best deal in town for a week of summer fun. Also, don't forget to schedule your physicals ahead of time. **A new physical form is required each year now.**

5. PINEWOOD DERBY CONCESSION: Cub Scout Pack 635 is running the food concession at the district Pinewood Derby on April 3. They've asked for some Boy Scouts to help man the concession on that day. You'll get service hours and have a chance to help out the Pack. Please see me for more information.

6. EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT: Nick Bovee will be working on his Eagle project at Indian Brook on Saturday, April 17, and may also need to work on Sunday the 18th to finish up. He's going to need A LOT of help, so please put it on your calendar if you're available.

7. SCHEDULE CHANGE: If you missed this last week, here it is again. Due to circumstances TOTALLY beyond the control of myself and the troop committee, we have to switch the dates of the camporee and Scouting for Food. Council has, in its infinite wisdom, once again chosen to change the camporee date and location. I am now told that it won't change again. SO....
New date for Spring Camporee: May 7-9 in Alburg
New date for Mandatory Scouting for Food: Saturday, May 22
Again, I apologize for this, but it can't be helped. (FYI, right now our webmaster's hair is smoldering and may in fact spontaneously combust at any moment. Sorry, Mark!)

8. MT NORRIS FUNDRAISER: Mt. Norris is planning a much-needed renovation of the waterfront, complete with a new dock and and sailing area. They are asking for contributions to help fund this so the project can be completed before camp starts this summer. If anyone is interested in contributing, or would like more information, please let me know.

9. PERSONAL FITNESS MERIT BADGE: If you are working with Mr. Thompson on this badge, please check your e-mail periodically for updates so you'll know when to meet.

10. TROOP ELECTIONS: Coming up fast!. SPL and Patrol Leader elections will be on April 7. Please start thinking about whether you'd like to run. Remember that this is your chance to participate in the troop leadership and to help shape the troop and its activities. (For those of you who read this far, here's a bonus for you: A tasty treat on Wednesday if you tell me the name of Kyle Boomhower's pet rabbit: it's Caramel ((the rabbit, not the tasty treat)). ) You must be a Life scout in high school to run for SPL and 1st class and 8th grade to run for Patrol Leader. If you plan to run please see me on Wednesday.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. See you Wednesday!

OK, seriously, I'm not sure how I keep doing that! Never said I was good at computer stuff. Apparently there's some button on my computer with which I need to familiarize myself. There is a lot of stuff here that was not in the earlier, erroneously sent e-mail, so please look through this one too.

Anyhoo, this is the real deal.

1. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: Winter cooking! Don't forget to bring anything you've been assigned by your patrol leader. Everyone should bring a mess kit as well.
We will also be cleaning the patrol boxes. Our quartermaster has informed me that they are looking pretty hairy, with some souvenirs from last fall's cooking extravaganza remaining. Pots, pans, etc. will need to be cleaned prior to cooking.
Since it's St. Paddy's Day, those great green class B t-shirts are good for this week. NEW GUYS: We will have troop t-shirts at this week's meeting. Each new scout will receive one t-shirt. You'll also have an opportunity to order/purchase additional shirts (you'll want 2 for summer camp) and hooded sweatshirts.
We'd like to have some of you wear your hoodies, so people who need to order them can check out the sizes.

2. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: Lashing!

3. MT. MANSFIELD HIKE: Many, many thanks to Elliot and Mr. Baglini for organizing the event, and to Mr. Pelchat, Mr. Thompson, and Mrs. Sweeney for their efforts as well. I understand a great time was had by all!

4. TFC CAMPOUT: March 20-21 at Mt. Norris. This campout is a whirlwind of advancement for those under first class. We'll sleep in the cabins and spend a busy day and night working on under first class requirements.

5. MT. NORRIS DEPOSIT: If you'd like to attend Summer Camp, please return the attached form with your $25 deposit in the next 2 weeks. Summer camp at Mt. Norris will be the first week of August. Hey, the 635 50-year patches have arrived! I'll have them at this week's meeting. If you brought cans of food to the October Court of Honor, see me this week for your patch. (Don't worry, I have a list of you guys.) If you did not bring a food donation, you can purchase the patches for $3.50 if you'd like.

If you're available, you can spend a little time serving our community and rack up a bit of service time while you're at it.

2. PLC MEETING: PLC guys, we're meeting this Tuesday at my house at 6:30. Come ready to get down to business and be efficiently productive ~ new NCIS starts at 8:00! Don't forget your notebooks.

3. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: This Wednesday we'll welcome our newest group of Scouts to the Great Troop 635! We have seven boys joining the troop this year. 8. THANK YOU!!! HUGE thanks to Mr. Hack for arranging our ski day at Bolton Valley last Tuesday. Several scouts and a couple of siblings, and even your very own scoutmaster spent a great day on the slopes. A few first-timers caught the skiing bug and learned the ropes, thanks again to Mr. Hack. Hey, guys!
I hope you all had a nice weekend and that you did something nice for someone on Valentine's Day.

1. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: Busy week! We will start with OA elections. Please note: We must have at least half of our members to hold this election, and the OA will be here to facilitate it. So, please attend if at all possible so their time is not wasted. Thanks!

After the OA election we'll get outside for some cross-country skiing. We are welcome to use the ski equipment at the middle school, or you may bring your own. A headlamp or flashlight would be a good idea!

At this week's meeting, we'll also be officially disbanding the Chompie patrol, as they've completed their first year in the troop. These guys will be assigned to our regular patrols as of this week. Congratulations to the Chompies on a great first year.

2. CODE OF CONDUCT: As we discussed at last week's meeting, we'll be enforcing our BSA Code of Conduct more strictly in order to ensure a safe, comfortable scouting experience for all. For most of you, this will not have much of an effect, as we're blessed with a great bunch of scouts who do their best to live by the Scout Law. Please take a moment to download the attachment and review it with your parents.

3. SKI DAY AT BOLTON: Jamie Hack's dad has kindly arranged for a discounted rate for our troop next Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Bolton Valley. I am waiting for the last-minute details, and will pass along all the important information in an e-mail tomorrow (Tuesday) night. Just a few things to nail down before then, but mark your calendars and check your e-mail tomorrow.

4. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: OK, technically it's next next week's meeting. NO MEETING ON FEB. 24!!! Our next meeting will be on March 3. We'll welcome our next scouts who crossed over this past weekend. Please make them feel welcome.

5. LOST AND FOUND: If anyone has a pair of jeans that were mistakenly brought home from the Fraser campout, please bring them to the meeting so they can be returned to their rightful owner.

6. PERSONAL FITNESS MERIT BADGE: If you are working with Mr. Thompson on this badge, please check your e-mail periodically for updates so you'll know when to meet. (Right, Boomer?)

7. MT. NORRIS UPDATE: The EPA cleanup at Mt. Norris is almost complete. The only work remaining is to repave the parking lot, which will be done this spring. The EPA has tested all the buildings and they have been declared safe. All of the camp tents have been cleaned, and all of the mattresses have been replaced. If any of you is interested, I also have a letter from the EPA detailing what has been done.

Hello, all!

I begin the week lamenting the pathetic dearth of entertaining Superbowl commercials last night. Slim pickings indeed. I did enjoy the halftime show, though. The Who can still rock. And who knew that Pete Townshend could still do the whole windmill thing on his guitar without his rotator cuff exploding? (Can you do that, Pudding?)
Here's what you need to know this week.

1. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: I'd like to ask all the parents to please attend for the first 20 minutes or so, if at all possible. There's some important information to discuss. Then we'll move on to some lashing projects. Please try to think of some creative lashing projects to suggest to your patrols. I'd love to see some really inventive creations next week. 2. PLC MEETING: We'll meet at EMS before the troop meeting this week at around 5:30.

3. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: We'll start with OA elections, then, weather and snow permitting, we'll get outside again for some cross-country skiing and/ snowshoeing. I believe we'll be able to use the school's skis; you're on your own for snowshoes. Headlamps would be great.

4. PATH TO EAGLE: Mr. Rich "Woodsy" Woods, a teacher at EHS and the chair of the Eagle Boards of Review, has offered to meet with any Life scouts (or Star scouts who are within spitting distance of Life) who would like some guidance about the Eagle Scout requirements, Eagle project, etc. We'll meet on Monday, February 15 at 6:30 at Essex Middle School. PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND! If you plan to attend, please let me know in advance so I can bring your progress report (badges, partials, etc.) This is a great opportunity to get some very sage advice that will help you achieve your goal.

5. LOST AND FOUND: If anyone has a pair of jeans that were mistakenly brought home from the Fraser campout, please bring them to the meeting so they can be returned to their rightful owner.

6. PERSONAL FITNESS MERIT BADGE: I know many of you started this badge a while back. Mr. Thompson has offered to work with those of you who need to finish the requirements. Please see him at the meeting to make arrangements. Thanks, Mr. T!

7. EAGLE PROJECT: Nick Bovee will be working on his Eagle project at Indian Brook as soon as the snow goes away in the spring. He'd like to know if anyone has gravel shovels they'd be willing to lend, and also if anyone with a truck would be willing to haul a couple of loads of gravel when the time comes. He's looking at late March or early April.

8. MT. NORRIS UPDATE: The EPA cleanup at Mt. Norris is almost complete. The only work remaining is to repave the parking lot, which will be done this spring. 1. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: BROOMBALL! This is one of those age-old favorites that we try to get into the schedule each year, and most of the time, like this year, the weather cooperates. There should be a good layer of ice, so bring your boots and your brooms. PLEASE, no skates or hockey sticks. Helmets wouldn't be a bad idea. Dress warmly, as we'll be outside the whole meeting. Meet at MAPLE STREET PARK, 6:30 on Wednesday. Please plan for pick-up at around 7:45.

2. PLC MEETING: We had a meeting planned for this Tuesday, Feb. 2, however I need to reschedule this due to the orientation at the high school that night, and this week we'll be outside, which doesn't lend itself to a constructive meeting. Soooo, I'd like to meet before the troop meeting next week on Feb. 10. PLC guys, please let me know if this works for you.

3. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: I'd like to ask all the parents to please attend for the first 20 minutes or so, if at all possible. There's some important information to discuss. Then we'll move on to some lashing projects. Please try to think of some creative lashing projects to suggest to your patrols. I'd love to see some really inventive creations next week.

4. CONGRATULATIONS! Adam Watts has finished his Eagle Project. Remember when you used to snuggle up to the big bear in the library when you were little? The bear had seen better days and had been relegated to storage due to his less-than-huggable condition. Adam has resurrected the bear and given him a new lease on life. His innards have been repaired, his coat has been cleaned and restored, and he has a closet full of newly sewn seasonal clothing to choose from. Be sure to check him out at the library. When he arrived there last week he was, of course, wearing his Boy Scout uniform, complete with merit badges and Troop 635 neckerchief. Well done, Adam!

5. SPRING CAMPOREE: OK, this is some very preliminary information that I got at the round table last week. Nothing's been confirmed, but it sounds like the camporee will be moved back a couple of weeks to the weekend before Memorial Day. Looks like it will likely be at Button Bay, with the Maritime Museaum and the Basin Harbor Club lined up to help provide activities. If it goes this way, should be pretty awesome. More information to come.

6. SCOUTS NEEDED: I still need scouts to head up Day of Koolness. As of now, there is no Day of Koolness and will be no Day of Koolness unless someone steps up to organize it. Ball's in your court, guys.

7. PERSONAL FITNESS MERIT BADGE: I know many of you started this badge a while back. Mr. Thompson has offered to work with those of you who need to finish the requirements. Please see him at the meeting to make arrangements. Thanks, Mr. T!

9. MT. NORRIS UPDATE: Great news! Yesterday I received in the mail a letter from council stating that the EPA cleanup is almost complete.

Hello, all!

Well, it's Monday night, and I've procrastinated enough getting this out to you, so I won't waste precious time trying to be witty or clever.

1. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: Yes, folks, this week we'll play a game of Winter Survival First Aid Jeopardy, planned by that Ace of Bandages, that Prince of Splints, that Master of Disaster Response, Steven Maloney!, We'll also start working more with the patrol method, and counting attendance and uniforms. Over the next several weeks, I'll be keeping track of these statistics, and one lucky patrol will win fabulous prizes! (APPLAUSE.) Class A uniforms for all, please.

2. PLC MEETING: We had a meeting planned for next Tuesday, Feb. 2, however I need to reschedule this due to the orientation at the high school that night. I'd like to meet before the troop meeting on Feb. 3. PLC guys, please let me know if this works for you.

3. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: BROOMBALL!!! This is an old 635 favorite that the weather did not allow us to play last winter. The location is yet to be determined, and my hinge on the weather and whether or not there's ice anywhere. Most likely location will be either Maple Street Park or the rink in Westford. I'll let you know later this week, so please watch your e-mails. All you need is boots and a broom.

4. FRASER CAMPOUT: HUGE thanks to the Frasers for once again hosting this event. Y'all managed to cram 27 people into the Fraser deer camp, which is a feat in itself. A few brave souls toughed it out in the great outdoors. There were many traditional activities, including sledding in T-shirts, Ultimate Uno, and watching the static in Mark Furland's hair light up the night.
Thank you to the brave adults who watched over the mayhem: Mr. Fraser, Mr. Watts, Mr. Thompson and Mr. Parks.
I do have a few items that were left at the Frasers' on Sunday. Please see me at the meeting on Wednesday to identify them.

5. SCOUTS NEEDED: I still need scouts to head up Day of Koolness and the Spring Camporee. As of now, there is no Day of Koolness and will be no Day of Koolness unless someone steps up to organize it. Ball's in your court, guys.

6. PERSONAL FITNESS MERIT BADGE: I know many of you started this badge a while back. Mr. Thompson has offered to work with those of you who need to finish the requirements. Please see him at the meeting to make arrangements. Thanks, Mr. T!

7. UPCOMING EVENTS: February - We may have the opportunity for a Troop skiing day at Bolton Valley. More to come soon.
3/13/10 Assault on Mt. Mansfield (for older scouts)
3/19/10 TFC Campout at Mt. Norris (all under first class scouts)

9. SUMMER CAMP: I know many of you are planning your summer vacations. As noted on the attached event calendar, summer camp at Mt. Norris will be the first week of August. EARLY BIRD PAYMENT DATE IS MAY 5th. Also, don't forget to schedule your physicals ahead of time.

As always, if I've forgotten any information, important or useless, please let me know. See you all on Wednesday.

Happy January Thaw! I know most of you are disappointed with the sadly melting white stuff. (BUT, did any of you see the ginormous snowman over on Logwood Circle? Holy Frosty, Batman!) I'm sure, however, that there's plenty more coming. I'm also certain that there will still be some good sliding snow at the Fraser camp this weekend, as the road to their camp always seems to me to take me just shy of the elevation of Everest.

Here's the scoop for this week:

******************************************************************************************************
1. This week's meeting
2. Next week's meeting
3. Fraser Campout LAST CHANCE!! **Permission slip attached!
4. Scouts Needed
5. Upcoming Events
6. Eagle Project
7. How You Can Help
8. Summer camp

*******************************************************************************************************

1. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: Another "Problem Solver", this time testing winter outdoor skills. Again, please dress appropriately for the weather. (Class B's are OK.)
We'll also spend a little time talking about how we can better use the Patrol Method in our troop.

2. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: What is "Winter Survival First Aid Jeopardy", Alex? Come prepared to compete with your patrol for a tasty snack. Back to class A's, please.

3. FRASER CAMPOUT LAST CHANCE: Our annual Fraser (formerly Fleury) Campout will be on Saturday, January 23rd. We'll spend the day sliding, snowshoeing, and generally doing whatever we feel like. This event is intended to just have a good time. We'll sleep over in the Fraser's deer camp in Duxbury, which is well-equipped with plenty of places to crash. *** The deadline for this was last Wednesday, but if you e-mail me by Tuesday night (and bring me a Diet Coke with Lime) I'll cut you some slack.

4. SCOUTS NEEDED: I still need scouts to head up Day of Koolness and the Spring Camporee.

7. HOW YOU CAN HELP: Parents, I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate all of your support. I couldn't do this without you. Many of you have asked how you can help. One thing that would be great would be if you could encourage your scout to read the weekly update each week. I know some of the items are repetitive, but there is always information regarding upcoming meetings and events. By reading the email each week, your scout can better Be Prepared.

8. SUMMER CAMP: I know many of you are planning your summer vacations. As noted on the enclosed event calendar, summer camp at Mt. Norris will be the first week of August. EARLY BIRD PAYMENT DATE IS MAY 5th. Also, don't forget to schedule your physicals ahead of time.

As always, if I've forgotten any information, important or useless, please let me know. See you all on Wednesday.

Scoutmaster Steph
Hello, all!

Well, we seem to be firmly entrenched in winter. I hope you're all enjoying all the usual fun winter activities, like shoveling the driveway, raking snow off the roof, etc.

There are some significant changes to the schedule of events, so please read the following carefully. Yeah, I know I said that last week, but then we had a PLC meeting, and yada yada yada, here's the new schedule. Please discard the one from last week.

***********************************************************************************************************************
1. This week's meeting
2. Next week's meeting
3. Fraser Campout **Permission slip attached!
4. URGENT!
5. Upcoming Events
6. Eagle Project
7. How You Can Help
8. Summer camp

1. THIS WEEK'S MEETING: This week we'll be practicing winter-time fire building. Nature was kind enough to give us a chance to really test our skills this week! Please come dressed for the weather, as we'll be outdoors for a good deal of the meeting. (Class B's are OK.)

2. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: Another "Problem Solver", this time testing outdoor skills. Again, please dress appropriately for the weather. (Class B's are OK.)

3. FRASER CAMPOUT: Our annual Fraser (formerly Fleury) Campout will be on Saturday, January 23rd. We'll spend the day sliding, snowshoeing, and generally doing whatever we feel like. This event is intended to just have a good time. We'll sleep over in the Fraser's deer camp in Duxbury, which is well-equipped with plenty of places to crash.

BIG CHANGE: Due to the very generous amount of snow we've been given recently, we've decided to combine the Fraser Campout and Uncle Henry's into this one weekend. If you would like to build a snow shelter to sleep in at the Fraser camp, you may. We will not be camping at Uncle Henry's in Essex.

*** Permission slip and $12 for food must be returned this week. ***

4. URGENT: I need a scout to head up the Scouting for Food project. This is a large project and can be used in lieu of a position of responsibility for rank advancement. If you are interested, I need to know ASAP as it's time to start working on this. Scouting for Food is early this year, on Saturday, April 17.

I also need scouts to head up Day of Koolness and the Spring Camporee.

5. UPCOMING EVENTS: February - We may have the opportunity for a Troop skiing day at Bolton Valley. More to come soon.
3/13/10 Assault on Mt. Mansfield (for older scouts)

Happy New Year to you all!
I hope you had a wonderful holiday break and were able to enjoy time with your families. I know a lot of you went skiing, and I hope it was great. (Hey, Elliot, is this enough snow for you?)

9. TROOP NEWS: For those of you who haven't yet heard, I'm very happy to announce that Colleen Sonnick, daughter of Scoutmaster Emeritus John Sonnick and the Lovely Katherine, will be a big sister come June. In the unofficial but quintessential language of the troop, w00t!!!

As always, if I've forgotten any information, important or useless, please let me know. See you all on Wednesday.

Well, it's been a wonderful year, so I just thought I might wish you all a merry new year. See you next year. Of course, most of you will read this next year, but if you manage to read this beforehand, congradulations.

Oh yeah, I fixed the formatting issues.
Hello, all!

Well, our tree sales are off to a very strong start. The 25 wreaths were sold in the first 4 days, and about a third of the trees have gone on to happy new homes. Thanks to everyone for your time and efforts in supporting our troop. Here's what you need to know this week.
***********************************************************************************************************************
(1) Christmas tree sales ~ a few important notes
(2) Merit badge homework
(3) Non-Denomination Holiday Celebation, or "Festivus"
(4) Uncle Henry's
(5) Website
(6) Merit Badge Counselor Drive
***********************************************************************************************************************
(1) CHRISTMAS TREE SALES: We are down to a very few trees. Hopefully we'll finish selling all the trees very soon. The weather is definitely more winter-like, so please dress carefully and appropriately. Again, please keep the following in mind.
*** Please do not climb, play, or hide in the trees. We've had a few damaged this past week. Remember, we've paid for these trees, and if they are damaged and therefore not sellable, our troop is losing money.
*** Please make sure to keep track of how many trees are sold during your shift, and to tally up your sales and the money in your envelope at the end of your shift. If people are kind enough to make a donation, or say "keep the change", please note this on your sales sheet.
*** There is now a fire barrel at the tree lot. Now, I love a big colossal fire just as much as you do, however in this case we're going to have to maintain a little control. Fires must be contained in the fire barrel, and should not be visible from space. Please bring your own firewood if you would like to have a fire.
*** Again, if you need to switch a shift with someone, please send me a quick e-mail, just so I know who's supposed to be there. Thanks!

(2) Merit badges: Please remember any homework assigned to you by your merit badge counselor or troop guide for this week.

(3) "Non-Denominational Holiday Celebration" (to quote Elliot), or "Festivus" (courtesy of our current PLC): During the second half of our December 23rd meeting, we'd like to have a little time to feast on some goodies. If you don't already know what you're supposed to bring, PLEASE see your patrol leader.

(4) Klondike Derby/Uncle Henry's: During our last meeting, your patrol leaders took a poll to see how many scouts were interested in each of these events. As only a couple of scouts expressed an interest in the Klondike, we're going to stick to Uncle Henry's on February 13. For those of you who haven't participated in this event before, it's great fun. We'll be building snow shelters and camping out in them. Lots of snowy fun to be had during the day as well.

(5) Website: Please take a few minutes to check it out at www.troop635.com. You'll find permission slips, weekly updates, the events calendar and more. We're adding stuff all the time, so visit often. If you have photos of troop events you'd like to share, please send them to me so I can forward them to our Webmaster.

(6) Merit badge counselor drive: Yes, we're STILL trying to collect merit badge counselors for our troop. The scout who collects the most merit badge counselors will receive fabulous prizes!
Parents, please visit www.meritbadge.org and check out the merit badges listed there. You can look at the requirements for the badges and see which badges are up your alley. We are in a serious merit badge counselor drought and need to recruit some new volunteers. The more counselors we have available, the more opportunities we can offer to our boys.
As I've mentioned, all merit badge counselors will need to re-register with new paperwork. I know this is frustrating. I believe council is trying to sort out the mess that they've had with counselor registration over the past years. If you've been a counselor, or if you wish to be a new counselor, please see me for the forms. Many thanks for your participation!!!

As always, please e-mail your SPL, ASPL, or myself with any questions. See you on Wednesday.

(2) Merit badges: Please remember any homework assigned to you by your merit badge counselor or troop guide for this week. For my dentistry guys, you need to bring your tooth diagram, appropriately labeled. For Mrs. Fleury's Cit in the Nation, you need to have your letter to your Senator or Representative, as well as your presentation about a national monument. I don't know what the homework is for Personal Management, however if you're taking this badge, this sounds like the kind of personal stuff you should be managing.

Greetings, one and all!
Ah, 'tis the season...Christmas trees grace the tops of cars, wreaths are flying off the hook...and not a flake of snow to be found (sorry, Elliot, try to control yourself). Doesn't much feel like the end of November, does it? Yet our December merit badge month is nearly apon us, so PLEASE be sure to let me know which badge you'll be taking, if you haven't already. Really, it's easy. Just click "reply". It's right there on your screen. Go ahead, try it. You know you want to. C'mon, everyone else is doing it.

Here's what you need to know this week.

***********************************************************************************************************************
(1) CHRISTMAS TREE SET-UP: Thanks to all of you who pitched in to set up our Christmas tree lot on Saturday. Everything went relatively smoothly. The first tree was sold even before they were all priced and in place. From what I've heard over the past two days, business has been steady, and the wreaths are a huge hit.
Special thanks to Mr. Fraser and his intrepid crew for building our new Christmas tree shed. We'll all enjoy the absence of natural air conditioning this year!
Thanks to the moms who spent Saturday morning decorating the wreaths. They're quite beautiful, and apparently the public agrees, as they seem to be selling themselves.
And thanks to the dads who got our lighting rigged up. Let there be light!
LOST AND FOUND: If anyone finds a cell phone at the tree lot, please let me know so it can be returned to its rightful owner.
Please see the attached schedule for your assigned shifts. If you are unable to make it to a shift, it is your responsibility to arrange a trade with another scout. Please notify me of any changes. ADULTS: We need a few more parents who would be willing to take an extra Wednesday evening shift. We staff Wednesdays with adults only so the boys can attend the troop meeting. Please let me or Andy Watts know if you can help. Many thanks for your support.
For those who were unable to join us on Saturday, you'll be assigned an extra shift. We'll let you know when you're needed shortly.

(2) PLC: Yup, it's this week. Tuesday, December 1, 6:30 at my house. Don't forget your notebooks, please.

(3) DECEMBER: We'll be starting merit badges/advancement this Wednesday. Please bring something to write with and on. If you haven't already, PLEASE take a moment right now to hit "reply" and let me know which you're planning on taking. It's important so that the counselors can have materials prepared for the correct number of participants. Under first class guys will continue to work on advancement. All others may choose from the following merit badges:
Personal Management (Eagle required) with Mrs. Sharp
Citizenship in the Nation (Eagle required) with Mrs. Fleury
Dentistry (yes, really) with yours truly, Scoutmaster Steph
You can check out the requirements for each badge at www.meritbadge.org.

(4) Klondike Derby/Uncle Henry's: We haven't done this in several years. The Klondike Derby is a district event at Mt. Norris. Patrols build sleds and compete in different events using scout skills. Sounds like a great time. As an alternate activity, we may have an Uncle Henry's campout this year, on the same day. (February 13, 2010, I believe). Uncle Henry's is a day of winter fun, snowball fights, etc. We build igloos or snow huts and camp out for the night. If there are enough scouts interested in both events, we can likely have a group doing each one. You'll need to choose one or the other, but you can't do both, so think carefully! You'll need to decide by mid-December if you would like to do the Klondike so you'll have time to build a sled and prepare for the event. I'll have more information at the first December meeting.

(5) Website: Please take a few minutes to check it out at www.troop635.com. You'll find permission slips, weekly updates, the events calendar and more. Greetings, one and all!

First, let me wish you and your families a very happy, safe, and healthy Thanksgiving. This is one of my favorite holidays ~ a day to spend time with friends and loved ones (without the requisite gift-giving), and of course, to EAT! So dig in, unbuckle those belts, and fall asleep while you're watching the game. Just make sure you're awake and able to move again by Saturday morning!

(1) CHRISTMAS TREE SET-UP: This Saturday, November 28, beginning at 8:00. Usually goes until around noon. Once again, we'll be a the Sunoco station just up the road from Price Chopper. Please remember, the set-up is MANDATORY for all scouts. If you are unable to attend because you're out of town or having a brain transplant (the ONLY acceptable reasons), please let me know, so we can assign you an additional shift for selling trees. (For a few of you, the brain transplant option may be worth the extra shift...)

Please see the attached schedule for your assigned shifts. Those of you who turned in your shift preferences in the last several days have been added. If you are unable to make it to a shift, it is your responsibility to arrange a trade with another scout. Please notify me of any changes.
